Consumers and Organic Awareness
When I compare with people in last century and people in 21st century, I can see some differences in them. The ability and capacity of people became different and people in nowadays suffer a lot of symptom. Why it became different? Well...it is because of our choice of eating food. Nowadays, fast food, can foods and imported foods are popular and the consumers don't aware of the food they eat. So they become obese and suffer several diseases. They neglect the quality of food. Moreover, farmers use chemical fertilizer because it made their crops to produce in good quantity. If it goes on like this, we will all get into trouble and no one will live longer. Therefore, the producers and the consumers have to be aware of safe and healthy food.
As a saying goes, 'Youth are leaders of tomorrow', youth have the responsibility to solve the problem. I am also a youth and I believe I can be one of the change agents of my community. So, the process of organic farming, aquaponics in Mari's Garden and Olomana garden and farm roof I have been learning in Hawaii is indeed essential for me to share to the community when I come back to my country. I believe that people can surely gain the process of farming and there will be less obesity and people will surely be healthier in the future.
There are six ingredients which set my goal:
(1) Outside stimulation and facilitation
To give awareness and education about organic farming, organic business and food security to people is not very easy to act out. So firstly, I will share my knowledge and information to my partner organization, GaiHaHiTa and youth organization, ICON. Then, we will go to public centers and do workshop about food awareness.
(2)Strong local institutions and enduring commitment of local leadership
GaiHaHiTa is a youth organization and it has strong network with other environmental organization. It is a kind of place that attracts youth and gives environmental knowledge to youth. So I believe I can share my knowledge and implement my action plan through this organization.
(3) Transforming waste into resources
Food waste is not a waste if we can apply it e.g. vermicomposting which can be used as fertilizer for our home garden. That is very organic and useful for planting. So, vermcomposting is something I would like to share my community in order to manage foodwaste.
(4) A powerful symbol
If my project plan is worked out, people will get a lot of benefit by themselves. I hope to see many organic restaurants coming out. If one appear, it will be a powerful symbol for the town.
(5)Overcoming social obstacles
Actually people in my hometown are not much interested in environmental issue. They rarely think about what they are eating and where they got from. It is a challenge that people neglect about the environmental issue.
(6) Rapid results
I hope to see everyone in my hometown caring about organic products and aware about environmental issue. The more they care about the environment, the more the environment will be green.
